A big topic of conversation in the digital marketing world recently has been the intersection of search and social. The lines between the two are starting to blur with Google continuing to talk about social signals as ranking factors. There’s no question that social networks can do incredible things to increase your brand awareness and make your business more visible, but when it comes to pure SEO and where you fall in the SERPs how big of a role does it actually play?
In a study done by SEO Moz, SEO professionals were asked what tasks they spend their time on. 76% said they set up and run Facebook Business pages, no other task had more. The fact that most SEOs are including social media now in their responsibilities isn’t really a surprise and it doesn’t necessarily mean that there is any correlation to search. SEO professionals are uniquely positioned to take advantage of the high demand for business social media pages. What is surprising is that as a percentage more SEOs are working on business pages than are checking analytics, evaluating back links, or even blogging. No form of inbound marketing was practiced by more SEOs than Facebook marketing was.
While Social is definitely extremely important, the other inbound marketing practices that go along with a good SEO strategy like content writing, back links, and especially blogging are still incredibly important. From the data in SEO Moz’s study it looks like most of these SEOs are just latching on to the new big thing and not thinking about how it all works together. Social media is never going to eclipse search and reaching a balance between social media and your traditional SEO practices is essential especially when you can have them all working together.
