In a world of social networks, Reddit.com is rapidly becoming one of the most popular places for people to hang out. If you haven’t heard of it, don’t worry. Here’s a quick overview (though we also suggest you check out the site!)
Let’s start with why you want to bother with Reddit. After all, ANOTHER social media site might just break the donkey’s back. Reddit has millions of users, mainly comprised of young men, 18-44, with disposable income. You can drill down in Reddit to particular subreddits, and find users talking about pretty much any niche (including the one your business is in!)
You can buy ads on Reddit, but they start at around $20,000. They can demand that much because they get about 2.5 billion monthly views. Luckily, you don’t need to pay that to succeed.
Reddit is another prime example of content is king, but community is also incredibly important. The site determines quality content with a voting system. Every user can vote one time on every post, either an upvote or a downvote. Users can see the history of other users, so if you have two total posts and they’re both ads, you’re going to be called out and downvoted into oblivion.
Content with the most upvotes makes it to the first page, receiving MILLIONS of views in the process. Downvoted content is lost in the stew of unpopular cat macros. To be upvoted, post something interesting (be it a fact or picture) that people outside of your business would not be aware of. To get downvoted and disliked, just post any old advertisement.
